Eligible Participants: Physical Therapy Students who have had an orthopedic assessment and orthopedic interventions course. This course is not open to Licensed Physical Therapists.

This oneday lab course is open only to Student Physical Therapists who have completed their orthopedic course in PT School.   The course is designed to advance skill development in High Velocity Low Amplitude (HVLA) techniques. No prior exposure to HVLA techniques is necessary. However, as previously mentioned participants need to have completed instruction in orthopedic physical therapy.

Instructor: Dr. Davis Koh, DPT, MBA, GCS, CSCS

Assistant: Dr. Kenneth Kim, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS

Dr. Davis Koh is a sports and orthopedic physical therapist with over 18 years of experience. He earned his BS degree in Physiological Sciences from UCLA as well as his Master and Doctorate degrees in Physical Therapy from USC. Dr. Koh’s career began as a staff physical therapist at UCLA Medical Center specializing in orthopedics, cardiac and neuro-rehabilitation. Following that, he completed the Kaiser Permanente Orthopedic Residency Program in 2000. Dr. Koh specializes in soft-tissue injuries, sports biomechanics and in stabilization exercises especially for the shoulder, back, hip, and knee complex. He currently serves as Chief Injury Officer and Physical Therapist at Koh Physical Therapy Lab in Irvine, CA.

Agenda:

Lecture will be approximately 2 hours and consist of:

  • Introduction
  • Review of Indications/contraindications for HVLA
  • Current Theories on HVLA
  • Biomechanical vs non-biomechanical thrust direction
  • Cavitation vs non-cavitation thrust efficacies
  • Soft tissue treatment pre vs. post-HVLA technique
  • Theories on pre-thrust joint positioning

Lab portion will be approximately 6 hours and consist of:

  • Demonstration of various hand hold options for HVLA
  • Proper body mechanics for HVLA
  • Prone vs. supine vs. sitting vs. standing options
  • HVLA spine techniques by location:
    • C0-C1
    • C1-C2
    • C3-C6
    • Cervicothoracic junction
    • Mid-thoracic
    • Thoracolumbar junction
    • Lumbar/sacroiliac options
    • HVLA extremity & rib options
